Wake Up Sid - One of Dharma Productions' better films
Karan Johar's latest directed film Student of the Year's trailer has released! Check out the trailer for Karan Johar's first film without Shahrukh Khan, and with three debutantes!
Uhhh... Karan, we asked for a film, not for a video of the Olympic Training Camp! Produced by Dharma Productions (Karan Johar's production company), this is one of the worst trailers I have seen from such a reputable director and production company. Yes, the trailer does provide an idea of what the film is going to be about (some high school kids competing to be the coolest student ever, because obviously people want to see a film about that), however the trailer is not very appealing. kya karoon Karan Johar (what do I do with you?!), I think the only entertainment factor of this film will be how stupid it is! (but the music will probably be good). Now to the brand new actors!

This film stars Varun Dhawan (David Dhawan's son), Alia Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt's daughter) and Siddharth Malhotra (not a filmi kid). I don't really want to bother differentiating between Varun and Siddharth, so in this trailer, I'm just going to refer to them as 'the guys'. I mean, they have the same six-pack abs and designer clothes anyway (or that's what it seems like). So, the guys seem to be physically fit, (good for an actor) but I'm not entirely sure how well they will do in the acting department. Also, this film may not provide scenes in which they can show their talent anyway, considering they're seemingly training for the olympics most of the time. I think we'll have to wait for another trailer or promo to see how talented they really are. As far as Alia Bhatt, I really don't think she's that good-looking. Even putting her in designer clothes and dark lipstick doesn't really help her looks. The fact that she's young (she's only 19) might also contribute to why she isn't as beautiful as she could be (I mean compare Kareena Kapoor in her debut film Refugee to now), so I'll give Alia a chance. As far as her acting, same as the guys, you can't really tell in a trailer like this one.

The music sounds good though! Of course Karan Johar always has excellent music albums, and Vishal-Shekhar are doing the music, so we should expect excellent! And it looks like the film has a lot of dance numbers, and Karan Johar dance numbers are normally awesome (pretty much any song in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham can validate that). The music and the dancing is the only thing that's attracting me to the film right now, so Dharma Productions should promote the heck out of the music and song promos if they want the public to see this film.

I think the Indian audience is past the stage of wanting to watch a film about a bunch of privileged people (kids actually) compete for frivolous things, so I really don't know how well this will sit with the public. I can only wish the best to Karan Johar (I still root for him sometimes, he did help make Kal Ho Naa Ho, one of the best movies of all times) so hopefully he has some better promos up his sleeve! Do you think Karan Johar will live up to the magic he always creates?
